Barry St John (Major Minor) Northern Soul

Barry st john

This mexican press of Barry St John LP on Fresa (FL – 6) was found with my friend Mundo in Juarez Mexico in a place called Neveria Acapulco, we must have dug close to three hours but it was worth it. A little bit more about Barry St. John
Here

“Scottish singer Barry St John released some fine tunes in the mid-to-late 1960s but they were largely ignored by the record-buying public. She had to wait a decade before they became sought after by Northern soul fans. She was born Elizabeth Thompson and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. Liz, as she was known, enjoyed singing from a young age and it came as no great surprise to people who knew her when she chose to pursue a career in music. Her first stop was Hamburg, Germany, where she performed at the Star Club………”

Michael Yonkers Micro-Miniature Love / Kill the Enemy (GHAS-13)

Here is a release from Get Hip Record archive series from 1996. Here is liner notes taken from the cover…

“In the fall of ’68 a very enthusiastic Michael Yonkers walked into Dove Recording Studio with his make-shift band. For all practical purposes he appeared quite “normal” that is, until he brought out his custom made, bastardized Fender guitar – which was covered in tinfoil, multi-shaped antennas, giant red knobs, and dial-type things. Meters flew off the board as he unleashed the fury of his two tunes that day, heard here for the first time!”

The Dynettes New Guy / Witness To A Heartbreak (Constellation) 1965

Here is another killer 7 inch outta yet another Chicago label, Constellation, by The Dynettes. Found some info that was released on 1964, but judging from the serial number (C-65-261) on top of the production name I will assume that it was released on 1965.

Jerry And The Landslides – Get Off Of My Roof (P.P.X)

Finally tracked down an original, this was recorded in 1965. Here is some info on this cut that I took from Mad Music Archive

“Jerry of Jerry and the Landslides is Jerry Worsham, a Connecticut resident, former radio disk jockey and TV actor. The Landslides is the name given to a band from Long Island that laid down the background track for producer Ed Chalpin. In the wonderful weirdness of show business, Jerry never met the Landslides. (bigtvstar)
The version heard on “You Gotta Have Moxie, Vol 2″ is an unauthorized speeded up version of the original recording, which diminishes the quality. The original recording was in the key of E, the same as the Rolling Stones’ original on which this Christmas spoof was based.”

song lyrics

(verse 1)
I live in a three-room shack, way out on the edge of town.
There’s rats in the basement and the front porch is falling down.
It’s a cold night in December, I’m just gettin’ ready for bed,
When all at once I hear a clatter, band and rattle over my head. I said,

(chorus)
Hey, (hey) you, (you) get off my roof! Hey, (hey) you, (you) get off my roof!
Hey, (hey) you, (you) get off my roof! If you don’t stop, boy, I’ll call a cop.
Off my roof, buddy.

(verse 2)
My house was shakin’ so bad I fell right outa bed on the floor.
I jumped right up, grabbed my coat and hat and I ran out the door.
It was icy cold, the snow was two feet deep. I know I shoulda brought my boots.
Then I looked up on the roof and I saw a fat old man in a crazy red suit. I said,

(chorus)

(verse 3)
Down the chimney he came with a bound as I was peekin’ through the door.
Then he opened up his bag and started dumpin’ presents all over the floor.
He didn’t say a word, just turned, put his finger at the side of his nose,
Before I had a chance to stop him, up the chimney he rose. I said,

(last chorus)

Hey, (hey) you, (you) get off my roof. Hey, (hey) you, (you) get off my roof,
And I heard him say, as he rode away, I’m havin’ a ball. Merry Christmas to all.

This record here is from El Paso Tx. from a label that is more known to northern soul collectors than garage enthusiasts. Suemi had plenty of great surf and rock cuts, this one right here was recorded in 1965. Enjoy. I will post some more garage surf and some gritty soul from El Paso.

The Liverbirds – Why Do You Hang Around Me/ Diddley Daddy (Phillips)

The Liverbirds were an all-female british merseybeat group from Liverpool. This two cuts were comped on Girls In The Garage. The Flip “Diddley Daddy” is a cover song from Bo Diddley, his second single released on Checker records in 1955.

“….Formed in Liverpool in 1962, originally as the Debutones, the Liverbirds– guitarists Pamela Birch and Valerie Gell, bassist Mary McGlory and drummer Sylvia Saunders (they all sang), played the basic Mersey set list made up of mostly U.S. rock’n'roll of the time– Chuck Berry, girl group, early Motown, and made their mark in Hamburg, where they were more accepted than at home. They were regulars at the Star*Club, recording for the….”

This group consisted of Marlow Hendrix [aka Marlow Stewart] (lead gtr)

Sunday Servants – I’m Puttin You On (World Pacific)

This is a disc from Sunday Servants long rumored that John Cale and Lou Reed were behind this 45, but is nothing else than a false rumour and probably a trick to hike the value on this record. This was produced and arranged in 1966. Some more work and info on JJ Cale here.
